Robert K. Miller Insurance Agency and MAX Insurance® Contribute to Special Horseman Connection

(WESTON, OH) – Horses can be loved by all, but there is a special connection between a horse and a person with special needs that just cannot be matched.  Here in the Weston community, the Special Horseman Connection provides hippotherapy, competitive showing, equine assisted activities and adapted riding for persons with special needs, regardless if families can pay for it.  Thanks to a matching grant from Robert K. Miller Insurance Agency, Inc. in Grand Rapids and their partner, MutualAid eXchange (“MAX”) Insurance, more individuals with special needs will be able to participate in these equine activities.

Joseph Schroeder heads Robert K. Miller Insurance Agency.  He reached out to Stacey Creps, founder of Special Horseman Connection and customer of his agency, after learning about the MAX Agent Community Grant Program.  “Our agency has sponsored their semi-annual fundraising show in the past,” Schroeder said.  “We as a community are blessed to have such a wonderful organization and are pleased to partner with MAX Insurance® and its community grant program to make this gift possible.”

Being Prepared for the “What If”

Who wants to think about the “what if” moments when it comes to your home?  What if my house burned down?  What if a tree fell on my home?  What if my documents were destroyed in a fire?  What if my home has water damage and I can no longer stay in it?  None of us want to think about these types of events happening to our homes, but it can happen.

One way to prepare for a “what if” is to prepare a home inventory.  What’s a home inventory?  It’s a list of all the items and belongings in your home.  For if that “what if” moment happened, you would have a list of everything that is damaged or destroyed, making that devastating, unexpected loss a little easier to handle.

Did you know you can even create a home inventory electronically?  Check out HomeZada’s free home inventory app.  Take unlimited photos of the rooms in your home and items in them, plus your garage and outdoor living space with the app.  If the “what if” happened, you can have all the information of your home inventory in the HomeZada app and be able to access it with an internet connection.  Get started on your home inventory today!

MAX Mindfulness: The “Shoulds” of Life

By Dave Wine

You may have seen an REI ad that talked about the voices we hear throughout our lives – you know, the “shoulds and oughts”:   You should be careful.  You should be nice.  You should be happy.  You should smile more.  You should just play nice.  You should set a good example.  You should be in better shape.  You should take care of it.  You should take care of them.  You should do something more with your life.  You should be grateful.  You should not worry.  You should lose weight.  You should know your place.  You should play by the rules.  You should be less sensitive.  You should be more sensitive.  You should be more nurturing.  You should set a good example.  You should fit in.   You should put forth more effort.  You should not be alone.  You should settle down. You should grow up.  And on and on it goes.  Those voices in our heads that tell us we are not OK the way we are!   The ad then ends with “These are the voices we have heard our whole lives.  But they get harder to hear the farther we go outside.”

I’d like to change that to also read, “they get harder to hear the further we go inside.”  Meaning, it is when we practice mindfulness, going inside ourselves, observing those voices in our head, quieting our minds, that we can begin to remember that these don’t have to be our voices – we get to choose which voices we hear and which have meaning for us.  Most of the voices that give us our ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts’ are not necessarily true for us.  Most of them come from a long line of others telling us how we should be and most are also fear-based – if we don’t do this, then this will happen.   When we practice mindfulness, we can begin to sort through all those voices, keeping the ones that nurture us and letting the others go.  It is in living what is true for us (listening within) that there is harmony and when there is harmony there is wholeness.  And that leads us right back to MAX – creating and sustaining wholeness – not just in others but in ourselves as well.
