MAX’s $20K Charity Giveaway

Hello MAX Members:

We are celebrating a new milestone – 20,000 members. The number 20,000 is special to MAX because it represents the continued strong growth of MAX and our ability to live out our vision of creating and sustaining wholeness for property, lives, and communities.

In celebration of this milestone, we are introducing our $20K Charity Giveaway.  Will you help us choose the charity?  The three options are Feeding America, Mennonite Disaster Service, and Together We Rise.

Will you help us choose the charity?  Voting takes place April 22 - May 3.  The charity with the most votes will be announced on MAX's website, www.maxinsurance.com, Facebook www.facebook.com/maxwholeness, and Twitter www.twitter.com/maxwholeness.

  1. Feeding America
The Feeding America network is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, working to connect people with food and end hunger.  They work to get nourishing food – from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers – to people in need. At the same time, they also seek to help the people they serve build a path to a brighter, food-secure future.

MAX's Home Office Team in Overland Park, KS has participated in Harvesters Community Food Network's (local food bank partner of Feeding America) Holiday Boxes Food Drive the past three years, providing food items for a holiday meal and packing over 300 boxes for local families in the Kansas City region.

  2. Mennonite Disaster Service
Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) is a volunteer network of Anabaptist churches that responds in Christian love to those affected by disasters in Canada and the United States. While the main focus is on clean up, repair and rebuilding homes, this service touches lives and nurtures hope, faith and wholeness.

MAX was founded in the early 2000's when a group of Mennonite, Brethren and related Anabaptist faith communities agreed to blend their respective mutual aid societies into one cooperative insurance exchange.  MAX's Mutual Aid Ministries program has partnered with Mennonite Disaster Service in years past and believes in MDS's mission wholeheartedly.

  3. Together We Rise
Together We Rise is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of motivated young adults and former foster youth. Their vision is to improve the lives of children in foster care, who often find themselves forgotten and neglected by the public. They collaborate with individuals, companies, and community partners to bring resources to foster youth throughout the U.S. and use service-learning activities to educate volunteers on issues surrounding the foster care system.

MAX Harrisonburg, VA team members led a project of purchasing, decorating, stuffing and delivering 50 Sweet Cases in two counties in Virginia. The Sweet Cases are provided to foster children in place of trash bags which is all the children have to move their belongings sometimes. The entire MAX team, along with a company match from Mutual Aid Ministries, was able to make this fun project happen.

Thank you for choosing MAX for your home and farm insurance needs.  We are proud to celebrate this 20,000 milestone with you.

Dog Bite Prevention Tips

By Stephanie McLain, Claims Adjuster

Fluffy, scruffy, bouncy, and full of joy, dogs are and always will be man’s best friend. They do not, however, come with warning labels or instruction manuals. Every breed of dog comes with teeth and paws and they all naturally know how to use them. They do not always intend to be harmful. Take puppies for example who just want to play; they sometimes accidentally injure those they are trying to jump with and climb on.

Owners can take precautions with their pups to prevent bites from happening and avoid any potential injuries. Doggonesafe.com provides the following tips to consider:

  1. Leave dogs alone that are sleeping, resting, injured, very old, or with puppies. Also, give them lots of space so they feel comfortable.
  2. A safe dog is one that has a soft, relaxed, happy face and a wiggly body. Look at the dog’s body, face, and tail.
  3. Always walk away from dogs who cannot follow you. Never approach a dog that is on a bed or furniture. Do not bother dogs in cars or behind fences. Leave chained dogs alone. They may be protective of their space or their family and worried that you are an intruder.
  4. Keep dogs and kids separated during meal times.

It’s also important to teach your young ones the safest ways to interact with your pets. Here are some tips for the kids.

  1. Teach kids how to safely deliver treats to their pets.
    1. Kids can drop the food on the ground,
    2. Toss treats; or
    3. Give the food from an open hand.
  2. Teach your child to “be a tree” when confronted with an unknown, overly friendly or hostile dog.
  3. Teach your child to “be a rock” if a dog jumps on them and knocks them down.
  4. Teach children to play safe games such as fetch instead of running and jumping games.
  5. Teach kids to pet a dog correctly.
  6. Show them how to notice when the dog wants to walk away.
Be a Tree Graphic
Be a Rock

With proper training all around, we can continue to coexist safely and happily with our furry friends. Safety is always going to be priority number one, but caring for our companions is a close second. Owning a pet is a pretty great experience that you should want to share with friends and family. The last thing you should have to worry about it whether or not Fido is going to nip at Nana. Take the proper steps to avoid any issues ahead of time and you’ll be raising a courteous canine in no time.

Sump Pumps

By Stephanie McLain, Claims Adjuster

If you have a basement, chances are you have a sump pump. Unless you built your house yourself, it most likely just came with one and if you’re lucky, you’ve never had to use it. This unsung hero plays an important role in the first line of defense against a basement filling with water for whatever reason. As you think about it, you may think you don’t know much about them.

You may find yourself asking:

How do sump pumps work?

How important are they?

What happens if my sump pump fails?

Does my policy cover this?

These are great questions and you should know the answers so that you’re prepared in the event you either need to use the sump pump or your sump pump does not work.

  1. How do sump pumps work?
Well, very simply actually. The pump is placed in a sump which is a pit or hole in the ground in your basement that is used to collect water filling your basement. Since it’s collecting the water in one location, it’s easier to pump it up its line and out of the house.
  1. How important are they?
Importance varies by many factors such as your location, house type, etc. If you already have a sump pump, you probably need one and you should maintain it. If you are building a house, check with a contractor about the importance of installing one in your home.
  1. What happens if my sump pump fails?
Damage is possible. If your sump pump fails, you are at risk of suffering water damages in your basement to your dwelling and your personal property. It is important to maintain your sump pump and have it checked annually if not semi-annually.
  1. Does my policy cover this?
In the event damages occur, it’s a good idea to have coverage. As always, speak with your MAX agent about water back up and sump pump coverage. These coverages will help bring you wholeness in the event your sump pump fails and damages occur. Your MAX agent can go over what is and isn’t covered so that you’re knowledgeable and prepared for whatever may come. The key is getting the coverage. This is an optional endorsement and must be selected prior to damages occurring in order to take effect.

Next time you scoff at the eyesore in the corner that happens to be your sump pump, just remember, that sump pump is constantly on guard to keep your basement dry.
